Meta History Supports the Preservation of Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage

In a time when the world’s eyes are turned to Ukraine, a new project is emerging that is working to support the country’s cultural heritage. Artists from around the country have come together to create work that tells the story of what is happening there. Each token sold on the Meta History platform goes towards helping fund humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

In this article, we will explore Meta History in detail to try and get a better idea of how it can be used to help preserve the cultural heritage threatened by war.

Harnessing Blockchain Technology to Save Art Facing Danger

Meta History is a project launched earlier this year to document major events in Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The project is raising funds for Ukraine’s defense and humanitarian efforts by dropping NFT collections that feature the works of locally based artists chronicling the war in sequence. Each token goes for 0.15ETH, and since its first drop, the platform has raised more than $1.2 million for the Charity Foundation of Serhiy Prytula and Aid For Ukraine, the crypto fund established by the country’s Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

Russia’s relentless assault on  Ukraine has not only led to the death and displacement of civilians, but also the destruction of cultural heritage. “In the wake of Russian aggression, over 50 cultural institutions were destroyed or hit, according to the National Committee to Preserve Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage.” The overall damage estimated by the authorities goes up to $6-32 billion.

According to UNESCO, as of August 8, 175 cultural monuments in Ukraine had sustained partial or total destruction since the beginning of the conflict. These include 74 places of worship, 13 museums, 34 historic structures, 29 theatres and musical venues, 17 monuments, and 8 libraries.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture stated that “museums were among the key targets of Russian military intelligence.” In particular, the Donetsk Regional Museum was hit by an artillery shell, while the Luhansk Regional Museum was wholly destroyed. In Mariupol, the Regional Theatre and the Museum of Local Lore were also hit.

The Response from the Blockchain Community

In response, Meta History is harnessing blockchain technology in an effort to save art facing danger. From the first drop, which featured works by artists such as Vika Kirchenko and Pavlo Gudimov, Meta History has raised over $100,000 for the preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage. The project is ongoing, and new collections are released regularly.

NFTs to Document Major Historical Events

The Meta History project is using NFTs to document major historical events as they unfold. This allows for a permanent and tamper-proof record of what is happening in Ukraine. The project is also working to create an ever-growing collection of art that captures the story of the country. It also added a new meaning to the NFT abbreviation: “Never Forget This”

On July 21, Meta History released its third art collection, which covers the period from March 15 to 31, 2022. Various Ukrainian artists have contributed using a slew of techniques, from oil paintings to 3D motion and generative art, accompanied by verified tweets highlighting the event it illustrates.

On top of that, from July 28, the latest drop of 30 works will be exhibited and auctioned in Party Space, a partner platform of Meta History. All proceedings will go toward Aid for Ukraine. Donations of $100 million in cryptocurrencies have been transferred to the wallet of the Ukrainian Ministry of Digital Transformation since the beginning of the conflict in mid-February, securing funds for efforts for cultural preservation. Finally, humanitarian help and the Ukrainian army are also funded using crypto donations, as reported by Aid For Ukraine.

Meta History Is Working to Help Preserve Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage by Raising Funds

Meta History is working to help preserve these endangered museums and other cultural heritage sites. The project has already raised enough funds to support the restoration of five museums in Ukraine. Some of the most prominent artists featured on the platform include a number of video game designers, including Anna Sova, Andrey Roscha, Vika Kirchenko, Pavlo Gudimov, and Mykhailo Chereshnev, and Oleksandr Semeniuta.

The Meta History project is an important effort to document major events and raise funds for the preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage. With each new drop of NFTs, the project is growing its collection of art that tells the story of what is happening in Ukraine. By harnessing blockchain technology, Meta History is providing a permanent and tamper-proof record of major events as they unfold. If you want to help support the preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage, you can do so by purchasing NFTs from the Meta History website. Every purchase goes toward helping preserve Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

What Is the Future of the Project? Will It Spread Outside of Ukraine?

As mentioned, the project has successfully raised funds for a number of causes. However, the project is not limited to Ukraine and is working to expand its reach. The team behind Meta History is currently working on a new project that will focus on documenting human rights abuses around the world. If you want to stay updated on the project, you can follow them on Twitter or join their Telegram group.

Are There Similar Virtual Museums in the Metaverse?

Yes, there are a number of similar projects around the world. The Museum of Blockchain is one example of a virtual museum that uses blockchain technology to preserve history. The project is based in the United States and aims to use blockchain to protect freedom of expression and historical memory. Another project, called the Decentralized Virtual Museum, is working to create a decentralized network of virtual museums. The project is still in its early stages, but you can learn more about it on their website.
